about

Via Matt McDermott for resident Advisor reviews:

"I'm a true believer in the importance of not losing touch with the roots of a genre," Michel Baumann, AKA Soulphiction, told 5 Mag last year. This reverent tone flows through the music Baumann released over his 30-year-career, a trove of top-notch deep and minimal house tracks that are still being revealed even after he succumbed to cancer last month.

A new EP from Jonna and Javonntte, featuring remixes from Soulphiction and Marcellus Pittman, presents an opportunity to look over Baumann's role within the tradition of deep, soulful house. On the original version of "Jus Move," Javonntte, the underrated and diverse Detroit producer and vocalist, teams up with Jonna for an effortless and richly musical vocal house track. Rhodes chords hang in the air, perfectly enmeshed with Javonntte's soulful tenor.

It's those blue piano chords that form the basis for Baumann's dreamy, contemplative remix. Baumann developed his taste for house music as a DJ and record store employee in Stuttgart around the time the Berlin Wall came down. Throughout his career, whether referencing Electrifying Mojo or Larry Levan, he pursued a respectful homage to the Black roots of house. For his remix of "Jus Move," it sounds like he loaded the original Rhodes stems into the MPC, applied a light-touch cut-up method and some filtering to the bassline. The track achieves a dusty, bittersweet feel that's been attempted by many but accomplished by few outside of the Motor City.

The second half of that quote up top went, "... the history of house influences huge parts of my DJ sets opposed to playing my own tracks." It's safe to say Baumann would have been caning the Marcellus Pittman remix. The Unirhythm head comes up with his own catchy piano line and monster bassline, notching up another classic for the Detroit beatdown sound. As a whole, the record feels poignant, celebratory and timeless. When this release came together, no one knew Baumann would pass away before it came out. However, it's clear that he would have been proud to be featured alongside these artists, a small society of house heads who believe in the healing, authentic power that courses through this music.
